Event Previews

Another long list of weekend TV basketball; Here’s the schedule, on-air talent, notes and opinions

First, our condolences to the family of Larry King. The broadcast legend passed in Los Angeles. No cause of death was given. King had been admitted to the hospital several weeks ago with Covid. He was married and divorced eight times. Before he became a big-time network name, Larry worked in Miami where among other things, he did pre and post game shows for the Miami Dolphins.

Yes, the AFC and NFC championships take the spotlight, yet college basketball always heats up in late January. The scroll of games below is deep.

Thus, another endless weekend of college basketball (pending, of course, the fluid pandemic and potentially more postponements). For instance, on Friday night Seton Hall and Butler were scheduled to go at 9pm on FS1 but Covid got the better of it. The game was postponed. So Air Force and San Diego State due on FS1 at 11pm was moved up to 9pm.

It’s been an upside down season, not only due to Covid’s intervention. You’ve seen where for the first time in almost 60 years, neither North Carolina, Duke and Kentucky are ranked. I also looked at the Big East standings and saw that St. John’s, Georgetown and DePaul had the worst three records in the league. Ray Meyer and John Thompson are likely turning over in their graves. Meanwhile, it has to hurt Lou Carnesecca, 96, who kept St. John’s atop the Northeast heap for decades.

The New York, Chicago and Washington markets are critical to the Big East’s success. But the three cities are now mostly apathetic to college ball. In my days calling the then Redmen games, the three programs were contenders nationally.

  • Paul Sunderland is superb and likely America’s best play caller of volleyball. He’s a former star of the sport himself. In the 80s and 90s, he worked on the sideline for the NBA on NBC. He was also the sideliner for the Lakers when Chick Hearn turned ill. With Chick out, he was assigned to do the simulcasts but he was inexperienced and not very good. Paul does college basketball now for ESPN and he’s gotten better.
  • Lipscomb College is affiliated with the Church of Christ. You’ll note that its basketball game on ESPN+ is being called by Jonathan and Justin Seamon. It’s a father-son combination. Dad Jonathan was the school’s athletic director when it was an NAIA member. He’s now the Executive Minister of the Brentwood Hills Church of Christ in the Nashville area. He has continued to call the school’s games for years. Lipscomb was in the NCAA Tournament in 2018.
  • I noticed that the seasoned Tim Neverett who does the LA Dodgers on radio and TV is working hoops  for Fox this weekend calling San Diego State vs. Air Force in Colorado Springs.
  • Remember when ESPN took Robert Lee off an assignment because he has the same name as the Confederate Civil War general. Robert is working this weekend. I guess someone realized that the Civil War ended a couple centuries ago.
  • Stephen Bardo bounced earlier in his career by ESPN gets occasional assignments from Fox, including this weekend.
  • Brad Nessler gets a basketball game from CBS, Houston at Tennessee.
  • Boog Sciambi, known for baseball, has basketball this weekend. He’ll work with the talkative Dan Dakich.  Boog wishes he can do some NBA too.
  • Art Challis voice of Southern Utah is 72 and is in his 48th year calling its games.
