College Football
WEEK # 11
- Anish Shroff, an ESPNer, has North Texas @ Southern Methodist this weekend. He is also the fulltime radio voice for the struggling Carolina Panthers.
- Tim Brando and longtime partner Spencer Tillman are continuing along with Fox. This Fall, they seems to spend many weekends calling games in the states of Washington, Oregon, Utah and California.
- Matt Barrie is fine in the ESPN studio. His play-by-play is fair.

- I missed the fact that I wasn’t paying full attention when Tony Roberts passed. Strongly associated with Notre Dame, he passed on August 26th at age 94. Tony called the Irish games for 26 seasons beginning in 1980.
Miami vs. Florida State
Saturday afternoon the Miami Hurricanes face the number #4 Florida State Seminoles. Each school is still visibly rebuilding. In the 90s, they were bitter football. The Seminoles are tantalizingly close to the top. They haven’t been this tight, for matter a significant number of years.
On play-by-play, Jeff Culhane succeeded the legendary Gene Deckerhoff who retired after some four decades at FSU. Gene maintained a unique style. It was tough for Gene not to resist rooting. Yet when the opponent made a pretty play, he didn’t hold back either. The game was always fun.
Joe Zagacki is U Miami’s radio football and basketball play-by-player. The school had dumped its unmighty basketball program in 1971 and restarted it in 1985. Joe did color and studio work on one of the big AM stations then like WIOD. Through the years, Zagacki has won over the South Florida sports time base. He’s well prepared and descriptive. Time in grade has helped Joe. After a couple of decades, he’s up there with the market’s top historical five: Hank Goldberg, Eric Reid, Rick Weaver, Jimmy Cifalo and Joe Zagacki (top of mind). He’ll tell you that he spews game broadcasts the same way each week as “Therapeutic”.
