Full college listings: Dandies include ESPN’s #8 Arkansas vs. #2 Georgia; NBC airs #7 Cincy vs. #9 ND

College Football Week #5

Broadcast Notes
  • CBS, at least for now, would have the SEC game between #8 Arkansas and #2 Georgia, but ESPN will carry it this week with its number one announce team, Chris Fowler and Kirk ‘Herbie’ Herbstreit. CBS has #1 Alabama vs. #12 Ole Miss. with the always steady Brad Nessler and Gary Danielson Time is running. The entire SEC rights will go over to ESPN, including newcomers, Oklahoma and Texas.
  • #9 Notre Dame hosts #7 Cincinnati in South Bend. It should attract a ton of eyeballs on NBC. The jury is still out, too early to assess how Drew Brees is doing as an analyst. Partner Mike Tirico, a comfortable listen, is chomping at the bit for 2022 when he takes over for Al Michaels on NBC’s SNF.
  • Bob Black is an institution at Richmond, he’s called the school’s basketball and football games there forever. Bob will have Elon at Richmond this weekend. It can be found on ESPN+.
  • Anytime I see The Citadel, I think of Paul Maguire who played there and later popularly with the AFL Buffalo Bills. Paul was one of the funniest analysts on TV in his years with NBC and ESPN.
  • Lisa Byington, the newly crowned Queen of Milwaukee, keeps trying. She has Minnesota-Purdue this weekend on the Big Ten Network.
  • Chris Vosters who’ll do this weekend’s Charlotte-Illinois football game will be one of a few broadcasters who’ll audition for the Chicago Blackhawks TV job which opens at the end of the upcoming NHL season. The club’s beloved telecaster, Pat Foley, cuts back this season, then retires. Vosters, Steve Nelson and Mike Monaco will all get reps to see who gets the TV gig in 2022. Another member who’ll get the TV tryout is the Hawks radio man, John Wiedeman. The latter is superb.
  • One of the best, Fox’ Chris Myers has a doubleheader this weekend but won’t have to board a flight to get to either one. The former ESPNer has Arizona State at UCLA Saturday night on FS1 and Arizona at the Rams Sunday on Fox. Chris lives in the SoCal area. He’ll have to sleep quickly Saturday night.
  • Tons of games. Viewers will have their options. Schedule, times and talent, courtesy of Eye on Sky Air Sports.

Chris Myers reminds me of when CBS put together Vin Scully, George Allen, and Jim Brown, and had them do a lot of Rams games since they all lived in LA. After it was Scully-Allen, the trend generally continued. It kind of makes sense. I’m reminded of the story of Jon Miller doing a Sunday Night Baseball game featuring the Orioles, so he didn’t have to travel. On the air, Ken Levine asked if he liked staying home. Miller said, no, he got up and flew to Toronto to buy the newspaper, just to stay in shape.
