Hundreds of games: Fox has rivalry, Nebraska-Oklahoma; ESPN puts the cameras on Miami @ Texas A&M

Week # 3

There’s no real coast-to-coast network radio of college football. Years ago, Notre Dame was pretty close. ND fans might remember the late team of Al Wester and Van Patrick, one from Louisiana and Van from Texas.  The Irish and all other teams were allowed on national TV only a couple times a season. The NCAA itself ruled TV with a mighty fist.

With no TV, many alumni would get together and put together local parties listening to the games from out of town. Of course, so much has changed since.

TV technology improved but colleges were still restricted by the NCAA. The governing body assigned ABC for years and it covered a limited number of regional games and often just one national game,

So Notre Dame had its football games recorded for television and shown in a one-hour version early Sunday mornings. Just after the final gun sounded, the tape was condensed to one hour for a Sunday morning showing throughout the country. Lindsey Nelson would do the highlights mixed in with play-by-play. Often he’d say things like, “We pick up the action in the first quarter…”

These craziness all came to an end when the NCAA was taken out of the TV football business in the 80s by the Supreme Court.

The radio networks today – that cover college football and listed here – don’t go very deep consistently, including ESPN, Compass, Westwood One, Sports USA and Touchdown Radio. Saw another one today on this list that frankly is completely unknown to me, National Sports Network.

Delighted to see Carter Blackburn back. He’ll do games again on CBS Sports Network. He’ll be teamed up with Randy Cross tomorrow, a man once high on CBS’ NFL depth chart. They’ll partner on CBS Sports Network for Vanderbilt at Northern Illinois.
