Super Bowl Weekend includes a ton of basketball on some version of television: Well over 200 games!

Random notes:
  • There’s one Super Bowl and, yes, it’s a multigenerational matchup at QB. As for college hoops, there are over 200 games Friday through Sunday night! Remember though, Covid can turn the schedule upside down.
  • Tim Brando and Nick Bahe have a Big East matchup, Creighton at Marquette on the over-the-air Fox Network. Bahe himself was a guard on Creighton teams in the mid 2000s.
  • In addition to the Super Bowl, CBS has six college basketball games this weekend. I’m told that they’re all being done remotely. The two on Saturday on the mainstream network and the four Sunday are on cable, CBS Sports Network.
  • Now you don’t see this often. Bill Raftery works a Saturday afternoon game for Fox and a Sunday matchup for CBS. He teams with CBS’ Spero Dedes for Kansas at West Virginia on Saturday and on Sunday, he’ll have Fox’ Gus Johnson for Iowa at Indiana. My suspicion is that both games will be called remotely. Fox doesn’t divulge in advance whether their announcers are at home, at studio or on site.
  • Sean McManus, CEO of CBS Sports told us this week that he foresees college basketball games, particularly those of the mid-major level, continuing to be called remotely even after this dreaded pandemic is behind us.
  • Congratulations to John Sadak who has been hired as the new Cincinnati Reds play-by-play voice on television. John will replace Thom Brennaman. This weekend John is assigned the St. Bonaventure at St. Louis U game for the CBS Sports Network.
  • Poor Dominick Savino. He’s going right up against the Super Bowl, broadcasting Marist at St. Peter’s, 8 PM ET, Sunday. Dominick migt be talking to himself.
  • LA Kings hockey voice Alex Faust is assigned hoops for Fox this weekend, DePaul at Butler high noon, Saturday. Alex is quite versatile. The late Alex Trebek was a fan of his work.
  • Frank Forte has Western Kentucky at FAU. For years and years, he was the sports anchor for Miami’s Channel 10, the ABC affiliate.
  • Nice to see the attorney behind the microphone, Len Elmore joins Brandon Gaudin on Saturday for Northwestern at Purdue on Fox.
  • Bob Heussler does play-by-play Sunday for ESPN3, Quinnipiac at Fairfield. He was a longtime update voice on WFAN. Another ex-WFAN updater is John Minko. Mink does St. John’s radio.
  • Jim Kozimor has Cal at Stanford, the final game of the long weekend Sunday night. It starts just as the Super Bowl ends. If it goes to OT, Jim will be talking to himself too. Some 25 years ago, Jim was the radio announcer for the NBA’s 76ers.
  • North Carolina at Duke on ESPN Saturday doesn’t have the sizzle to it. Still, the enthusiasm by voices Dan Shulman and Jay Bilas won’t likely wane. Some rivalries stick come rain or shine.
