COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Week #4 College Football; Notre Dame-Ohio State steals the stage

COMMENTS:

The more I listen to Bob Wischusen, the better he grades with me. He’s versatile and bold. Does or has done college football, is the Jets radio play-by-player prominently, and does the NBA, college football, basketball and the NHL for ESPN. Depth of knowledge is required. He’s there with the  apt word for the right occasion. Strong and enthusiastic.

Bob reminds me of Dick Vitale with whom he works basketball. Dickie A announced this summer that he had been diagnosed with cancer for a third time, vocal cord and melanoma, The man is an indefatigable battler. In my humble opinion, Dickie V is #2 all-time behind Chris Berman in popularity who was in many ways the studio voice of the NFL and baseball. Vitale is 84 and Berman, 68. Both are workhorses.

Dan Hellie does occasional play-by-play work for Fox. He’s also had NFL assignments from the Foxies from time-to-time. On Friday over FS1, he’ll cover Air Force at San Jose State. His partner is Petros Papadakis. Dan was born in the Philippines in 1975 where his parents were stationed in the Peace Corps.

Charlie Neal, 78, is a Black college football broadcaster based in the South and still working. Several years ago, the nimble columnist for the  Ringer Bryan Curtis  told his readers “For decades, Charlie Neal has been the voice of football for historically Black colleges and universities, an NBA studio host and one of the architects of modern sports media. He deserves to be better known and celebrated.” Saturday, Charlie is on Texas Southern vs. Grambling State. It’s carried by HBCU-Go. Neal is a common name in sportscasting. Bob on the NBA over Turner and a Bob, same name, with the Indians (then) from the 50s through the early 70s. Now Dave Neal, Bob’s son, is on the SEC Network. Vin Scully stole the show, “A bouncer on the infield to Charlie Neal and that’s that…”

Relationships at work: Noah Eagle arguably his biggest assignment yet, Ohio State at Notre Dame. Primetime on NBC, Saturday night. Todd Blackledge and Kathryn Tappen join him. Dad Ian on CBS’ late game, Carolina at Seattle…..Cris Collinsworth, 64, on NFL and his son Jac, 29, with NBC’s college both assigned to game coverage. This Charlie Neal also played for the Mets in the 60s.
