Event Previews

Well over 100 college basketball games are available this weekend, wherever you stumble; Talent listed

You want games, we have tons of games, more than you can handle. In the 70s and 80s, each DI team might have been on TV a couple times a year. That was it. Now any game, even if it’s against the Little Sisters of the Poor, it’s available somewhere.

This list compiled by Eye on Sky and Air Sports demonstrates the enormity of coverage if nothing more.

Most of the videocasts below (be it conventional TV, cable, streamcasts or the like) list the talent

Came across broadcast names that triggered thoughts but too many are unknown names. That’s for sure.

Random notes:

  • Joey Wahler does Wagner basketball on Staten Island. He’s a former MSG College Broadcaster of the Year when at Seton Hall.
  • Ron Thulin was on Turner’s roster doing the NBA before changes were made. He’s assigned to the Louisiana-UT Arlington game.
  • Talkie and former ND basketballer Doug Gottlieb does a game for Fox, Fresno at Nevada.
  • Debbie Antonelli who for my two cents is the best female analyst today has Georgia at Ole Miss this weekend.
  • Army plays Navy Saturday at high noon. No, it’s not football.
  • Talking of former NBA announcers. one time Turner play-by-play announcer Bob Neal is apparently retired. His son Dave has Mizzou-Texas A&M. His analyst is Jon Sundvold, a former sharp shooter who played in the NBA. Sundvold is smooth but I wish his comments were beefier.
  • Jack Benjamin will do Temple at Tulane. He’s good, real good. His uncle is Gary Zenkel, President, NBC Olympics.
  • Dan Bonner has BC at Notre Dame. He knows the rules of the games. I don’t think I’ve ever learned anything about the intricacies of the game listening to him.
  • Dave Cohen who has the Coastal Carolina @ Georgia State game was the announcer on Bob Costas’ national radio program. Bob referenced him as “Coney Island Dave Cohen.” Cohen also called Yankees’ games at one point  on MSG Network.
  • Great to see that one of the best, Tim Brando, is working Fox’ Noon game Saturday, #21 Ohio State at #14 Illinois. Should be a dandy. Tim will partner with former UConn star Donny Marshall. It’s on the full Fox network.
  • You want to know how many broadcasters there are today? There are five separate Browns on this list, Matt, Brandon, Doug, Jim and Kevin. Talk about broadcasting becoming a commodity, you better believe it. The best of the Browns on-air: Hubie Brown.
