Baseball Broadcasting

Amazingly talented, Bob Costas seems to be moving on; A gentleman and honest!

  • Hall of Fame announcer Bob Costas, 73, most recently of TBS, announced his retirement from play-by-play after the 2024 season. Costas worked three World Series in the 1990s and will continue as a contributor with MLB Network. Alex Faust, 36, who also calls baseball for Apple TV as well as hockey and tennis for TNT Sports, is the new #2 announcer for TBS.

  • Hall of Famer and longtime Milwaukee Brewers radio announcer Bob Uecker died in January at the age of 90. Uecker, one of the most popular announcers in baseball history due to his humor as well as his appearances in commercials and on television shows, worked a limited schedule of home games by the end. The team stayed internal, with Jeff Levering serving as the team’s lead radio announcer and Lane Grindle moving to that spot when Levering is on TV.

  • 2024 Hall of Fame inductee Joe Castiglione, 78, retired from the Boston Red Sox radio booth after last season. His successor will be his primary backup, Will Flemming, the younger brother of the San Francisco Giants’ Dave Flemming.

  • John Sterling, 86, the radio voice of New York Yankees since 1989, retired in April of 2024, returned to work the team’s games during the playoffs, then called it a career. His replacement in the Bronx is Seattle Mariners TV announcer Dave Sims, a longtime New York City resident.

  • The Mariners stayed internal in filling Sims’s role, moving his backup, Aaron Goldsmith, to television full-time and moving radio pre- and postgame host Gary Hill Jr. to Goldsmith’s vacated #2 radio position.

  • In the analyst chair, Mike Blowers will not return to Mariners broadcasts after 18 seasons as the lead analyst. Like most teams nowadays, Seattle will go with a rotation of ex-players on that side of the broadcast.

  • The Miami Marlins let go of play-by-play man Paul Severino after seven seasons. Kyle Sielaff, 34, moves to TV after two seasons leading the radio broadcast. Sielaff’s spot will be filled by Jack McMullen, 27, who most recently worked as one of the announcers with Triple-A Indianapolis.

  • The contract of Vince Cotroneo, was not renewed as the Athletics moved from Oakland to a temporary home in Sacramento. Cotroneo had been the #2 announcer for the A’s since 2006. The team did not bring in outside help, with Johnny Doskow taking over primary #2 duties.

  • Bob Carpenter, 72, who has been the TV announcer for the Washington Nationals since their second season in D.C., has announced 2025 will be his last season in the Major Leagues.

Most teams will have a variety of analysts work at least a partial schedule. Some teams do a play-by-play rotation as well. This list will only feature the most common local broadcast teams.
