60 year old Nt’l Sports Media Ass’n lists its annual nominees; Winners selected by their peers
Voting process is transparent; National and state-by-state winners will be announced in January

There are broadcast awards and there are broadcast awards.
The Frick Award, presented each year by the National Baseball Hall of Fame, is likely the most cherished of the four sports. Fans welcome baseball announcers into their lives up to at least 162 times a year.
Because baseball games can often be lumbering, announcers undergo crucibles all summer. The good play-by-play voices entertain and share anecdotes. The bad ones are exposed.
Some, from my perspective, don’t merit being called play-by-players announcers anymore because analysts dominate. On network television, with every motion and movement of the game weighed like precious metals, play-by-play announcers are reduced to no more than hosts. Calling play-by-players set-up voices might even be a stretch today. I doubt a Scully, Caray, Garagiola or a Jon Miller would be hired now in a traditional play-by-play role. The tightening restrictions are muzzling.
It’s why baseball announcers define themselves locally. It’s where they earn their stripes and build bonds with fans, listeners and viewers. It’s why the Frick is the Pulitzer of play-by-play broadcasting.
Yes, Pro Football Hall’s Rozelle and the Basketball Hall’s Gowdy Awards are coveted, but not nearly as much as the Frick. Locally, baseball announcers are generally more popular than basketball voices. As for football, there are too few games to build relationships.
The administrators of the Rozelle and Gowdy awards are also their own worst enemies. The secrecy over how selections are determined dulls the honors of both awards. Who votes? Who selects the nominees? Lots of mysteries. Who’s on the ballot? What’s the timeline? When will the announcement of the winner be made?
Lots of head scratching too. The Rozelle without Howard Cosell is the equivalent of a Hall without a Lombardi. The Gowdy without Musburger is a Basketball Hall without Jordan. At this point, both selection systems are blemished and clinically fractured.
Cosell pioneered prime time football and Musburger presided over the biggest platforms covering both the college and pro game. He did six NBA Finals and six NCAA Final Fours for CBS. Neither of the two giants has been recognized. Cosell hasn’t been honored by Pro Football and Brent hasn’t been by the Hoops Hall. To take it a step further, Brent should also get the Rozelle for fashioning the modern day NFL studio Show. It was he who popularized The NFL Today. But so be it.
It’s time for Canton and Springfield to expunge personal politics and biases. Cosell and Musburger weren’t in the business of cultivating friendships. So the Halls have been making them pay for it. Both entities should usher in an era of meritocracy. They have responsibilities to fans. You can almost say that both are quasi-governmental institutions and shouldn’t function indiscriminately. But they do.
The first step is duplicating what baseball does. The preponderance of voters should be the living winners. Who better appreciates the broadcast greats from the so-so than fellow practitioners themselves? On the basketball side in particular, I have a feeling that more so-so are about to get in at the expense of the greats.
That brings us to the NSMA (National Sports Media Association) made up of broadcasters and writers, present and past. The selections, and there are well over one hundred each year, are determined by a vote of the members, broadcasters and writers! It’s the way to do it.
Being recognized by peers, is the ultimate honor. It’s special. There can hardly be a fairer and more honorable entry of admission. No nonsense, no calling in favors, no prejudices. Nothing. It’s about worthiness, commitment, contribution and excellence. It’s not clouded or baseless.
Awards require meritocracy. This NSMA’s statewide and national nominees are listed below. Votes are being submitted and will be announced in January.
